theosophy and the dissenting western imagination.
In this 150th anniversary year of the Theosophical Society, Dara will present a series of talks examining the pervasive legacies of Theosophy. Its influence on the creative arts has been substantial; its influence on the New Age, fundamental; its impact on the study of religion increasingly recognised.
This present talk, Theosophy and the Dissenting Western Imagination, looks at the achievement of Blavatsky’s work in context of the history of philosophy of science. Special reference is made to the uneasy reception of Isaac Newton’s alchemical and other “non-scientific” works, the history of which is enlightening.
Insights from the history and philosophy of science help to situate Isis Unveiled and The Secret Doctrine in the wider cultural environment, which madam Blavatsky so extraordinarily disrupted.
